Gigabit-capable

Gigabit-capable means the network, in principle, can deliver download speeds of 1 Gbps (1000 Mbps) or more to premises—policy and marketing reporting use this label for coverage statistics.

Why it matters

It tells you what infrastructure class might be available, not what you personally subscribe to. You still choose a package and may be limited by Wi‑Fi or router hardware.

Example in UK broadband

National “gigabit-capable” coverage figures describe build and capability; your address might be included while you are still on an older package until you upgrade.
